                Worship and Community

Looking for a place to worship and learn?

Join us for Worship and Conversation at 6:00p.

Each Sunday we gather together to worship and learn through stories, songs, prayers and something we call the Lyceum.  What is the Lyceum? The term originated in ancient Greece, where Aristotle taught near Athens. In American history, the lyceum movement was an effort to provide education for communities through lecture series. Now the term is often used to describe cultural organizations responsible for presenting concerts, lectures, and cultural learning. We are using the term at Lockerbie Central to name the times when we gather to present and discuss theological perspectives on topics that matter.

Last Fall, for the Lyceum, we began a study series focusing on Speaking Christian by Bible scholar, Marcus Borg. Borg argues that the very language we use as Christians has become dangerously distilled, distorted, and disconnected from the beliefs that once underpinned it.  Borg calls for a radical change to the language we use to invoke our beliefs -- the only remedy he believes will allow the Church's words once again to ring with truth, power, and hope. During the Lyceum we are asking ourselves some orienting questions: (1) What is Christianity about? (2) What is at the heart of the gospel message? and (3) Why should people be Christian?  We will continue to explore these questions throughout the series.  This week we will focus on chapters 5 and 6 of Borg's book and look at our understanding of God and God's nature.

Our pastor is Brenda Freije, who is also the Pastor of Discipleship and Formation at North United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. Prior to attending Christian Theological seminary, Brenda practiced law with Baker & Daniels.  Contact Brenda at North or Lockerbie Central.
